Stretched along the North County San Diego coast where Swami's draws surfers and the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens overlook the Pacific, Encinitas has grown into one of Southern California's most established yoga and holistic-living communities.
Long before the studios opened, this stretch of coast was flower country, with greenhouses and poinsettia fields running back from Coast Highway 101. Encinitas is Spanish for little oaks. The Self-Realization Fellowship temple and hermitage founded by Paramahansa Yogananda has stood on the bluff here since the 1930s, and the surf break below it, one of the best known in the world, is called Swami's after him. That is an unusual thing for a wave to be named for. The city did not incorporate until October 1, 1986, when 69.3 percent of voters approved it, which makes the municipality younger than a good deal of what people come here to see.
