Mammoth Lakes is a high-altitude resort town in the Eastern Sierra beneath Mammoth Mountain. Surrounded by alpine lakes, hot springs, and the trails of the Ansel Adams Wilderness, it draws skiers and nature seekers year-round.

The Mammoth Mining Company was organized in 1878 to work the ore in Mineral Hill, and fifteen hundred people had arrived by the end of that year. The town sits on the edge of the Long Valley Caldera, a volcanic basin that is still geologically active, and Devils Postpile National Monument, a wall of columnar basalt left by a lava flow, is reached from here by State Route 203. Dave McCoy founded the ski area, and the Mammoth Ski Museum opened in 2004 to hold the record of it. Mammoth Lakes incorporated on August 20, 1984 and is the only incorporated town in Mono County.
