Americans settled Nevada City in 1849 in the Gold Rush and it incorporated on April 19, 1856. The Gold Tunnel on the north side of Deer Creek, built in 1850, was the first mine in the town. Anthony Chabot, working here, was a co-inventor of hydraulic mining, the technique that washed whole hillsides into the rivers and eventually had to be stopped by the courts. The downtown historic district holds several buildings on the National Register with California Historical Landmark status, and the Nevada Theatre still runs music, theater and dance.
