The first United States stockade named Fort Lauderdale was built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War and named for Major William Lauderdale; it was abandoned in 1842 when the war ended. The city incorporated on March 27, 1911 and became the seat of the new Broward County in 1915. It carries a hundred and sixty-five miles of inland waterways, which is where the Venice of America name comes from. The 1960 film Where the Boys Are, shot partly at the Elbo Room where Las Olas meets A1A, made it the spring break destination; by 1985 about three hundred and fifty thousand students came, and by 1989 roughly twenty thousand.
