Urbana became the seat of Champaign County when the county was organized in 1833, and took its name from Urbana, Ohio, the home town of state senator John W. Vance. In 1868 the Illinois Industrial University opened here with seventy-seven students; it became the University of Illinois, and the campus now runs across the line into Champaign. The older town kept the courthouse and the newer one got the railroad, which is why two cities of similar size sit against each other here with a single university straddling the boundary between them.
