Brunswick was incorporated as a town in 1739 and Bowdoin College was chartered here in 1794. The Androscoggin falls in three stages for a total drop of 41 feet, which powered the sawmills and the textile mills. Naval Air Station Brunswick was the town's major employer until it closed in 2011, and much of the land has been redeveloped as Brunswick Landing.
