Francis Preston Blair found a spring flecked with mica here in 1840, and the dry remnant of it is still visible at Acorn Park. The Silver Spring Shopping Center and the Silver Theatre were completed in 1938 at the request of the developer William Alexander Julian, and that streamline moderne frontage is still the visual shorthand for downtown. Silver Spring has never incorporated and remains a census-designated place, despite functioning as a city in every practical way. Discovery moved its headquarters here from Bethesda in 2003 and moved on to New York in 2017.
