Charles W. Fuller put a log toll bridge across the Truckee in 1859, Myron C. Lake bought it and called it Lake's Crossing, and when Lake deeded land to the Central Pacific the railroad made a station of it; the town formally began on May 9, 1868. It is named for Jesse L. Reno, a Union general killed at Fox's Gap on South Mountain. In 1929 Mayor E.E. Roberts offered a hundred dollars for a slogan and G.A. Burns of Sacramento won it on March 14 with the Biggest Little City in the World. Legislation in 1931 cut the divorce residency to six weeks and Reno advertised itself accordingly.
