Tucked into the far southern tip of New Mexico where the state meets Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico, Sunland Park sits beside the Rio Grande at the foot of Mount Cristo Rey. The mountain above this town was called Cerro de los Muleros, mule drivers' hill, until a parish priest in the Smeltertown neighborhood below, Father Lourdes Costa, convinced the El Paso bishop to buy it. Nobody was entirely sure at the time whether the summit stood in Texas, New Mexico or Mexico, and parts of the mountain are in all three. A wooden cross went up in 1933 and volunteers built the trail and a larger cross in 1934. The Mexican sculptor Urbici Soler was hired in 1937, worked from four in the morning until sunset out of limestone quarried in Austin, and finished the twenty-nine-foot figure in time for the first pilgrimage in October 1939.
