William Cooper bought ten thousand acres in 1785 and established the village in 1786, laid out by the surveyor William Ellison; his son James Fenimore Cooper grew up in it and wrote the Leatherstocking Tales. The village sits at the foot of Otsego Lake, which the novels call Glimmerglass, and the Glimmerglass Festival, founded in 1975 in the school auditorium, moved to a purpose-built theater on farmland north of the village in 1987. The Baseball Hall of Fame was founded here in 1939 by Stephen Carlton Clark, on the strength of a 1906 claim by Abner Graves that his late friend Abner Doubleday invented the game in a cow pasture here in 1839, which historians discount entirely.
