Central Park was not found, it was built, and the ground it stands on was cleared of people first. Beginning in October 1855 roughly sixteen hundred residents were removed by eminent domain, among them Seneca Village, a settled community of free Black property owners and Irish immigrants that had stood since 1825. In April 1858 the commissioners picked the Greensward Plan by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux out of thirty-three entries. Work had already started that August. The Lake opened in December 1858, the Ramble in June 1859, and the whole eight hundred and forty-three acres, two and a half miles by half a mile, was finished in 1876.
