Klamath Falls sits in a basin that is one of the great bottlenecks of the Pacific Flyway. The Link River Trail runs about a mile from downtown, joining Lake Ewauna to Upper Klamath Lake, and the Upper Klamath Basin carries roughly two-thirds of the migratory birds moving along the flyway. Rivers, lakes, meadows, conifer forest, juniper woodland, sagebrush grassland and rock outcrop sit close together here between the Cascade range and the high desert, drawing more than three hundred and fifty bird species, at times over a million birds at once. The Wood River Wetlands hold rookeries for herons, egrets, pelicans and waterfowl, and from late November into early March the basin holds the largest wintering bald eagle population in the lower forty-eight states.
