Oregon City was the legal end of the Oregon Trail, the place the wagons were actually headed, and it incorporated in 1844 as the first city west of the Rocky Mountains. It stands on the east bank of the Willamette just below the falls, built on three terraces that carry it from about fifty feet above sea level at the river to more than two hundred and fifty on the upper level. The falls did more here than turn mills. On June 3, 1889 dynamos at Willamette Falls sent power fourteen miles to Portland, the first long distance transmission of electricity anywhere in the world.
