The grant for Burlington went to Samuel Willis and 63 others on June 7, 1763. The city sits on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain north of Shelburne Bay, and the Church Street Marketplace runs four blocks through the middle of it as a pedestrian mall. Ira Allen gave 50 acres for the University of Vermont in 1791, and its charter was the first in the country to state that its rules would not give preference to any religious sect or denomination. It is the oldest university in Vermont and the fifth oldest in New England, and the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum sits north of downtown.
