Manchester was one of the towns Benning Wentworth chartered in 1761. Charles F. Orvis founded his fishing tackle business here in 1856, and it is the oldest mail-order retailer in the United States, which is a good deal of why a village this size has the shopping it has. Hildene, the Georgian Revival summer house Robert Todd Lincoln completed in 1905, stands southwest of Manchester Center and is open to visitors. Equinox Mountain rises to 3,850 feet directly behind the village.
