The town was settled in 1834 and called Midway, because it stood roughly halfway between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi, and was renamed Rockford in 1837 for the rocky ford across the Rock River. Swedish furniture cooperatives set up here in the 1850s and made the city second only to Grand Rapids in American furniture manufacturing, with John Erlander's Rockford Union Furniture Company at the head of it. From 1943 to 1954 the Rockford Peaches played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and won four championships, more than any other club in it. The Coronado Theatre opened in 1927.
