Los Lunas takes its name from the Luna family, whose Luna-Otero residence was lived in by family members until the 1920s and later became a restaurant. The town is better known for the marked boulder on Hidden Mountain west of here, called the Decalogue Stone or the Mystery Stone, which carries nine lines cut into a flat panel in a mix of Paleo-Hebrew and Greek letters reading as an abridged version of the Ten Commandments. Professor Frank Hibben of the University of New Mexico recorded it in 1933. Claims that it proves pre-Columbian contact run against the standard archaeological evidence, and it is generally regarded as a hoax, which has not stopped anyone coming to look at it.
