Raleigh is one of very few American cities planned and built specifically to be a state capital. It was established in 1792 as both county seat and capital and incorporated on December 31 of that year, named for Walter Raleigh, who sponsored the lost colony on Roanoke Island. The original plan was a grid with two main axes meeting at a central square and another square in each corner, modelled on Thomas Holme's 1682 plan for Philadelphia, which is why the street pattern feels older than the city. The oak-lined streets give it the City of Oaks name.
